We are so pleased to welcome everyone back this week. As we kick off the new term, whether you’re have stepped into a new role or returned to a familiar position, we want you to know your work with pupils with additional learning needs (ALN) is more important than ever. The impact you make, whether working with on a 1:1 basis, with a small group, or across entire classrooms, plays a key part in fostering an environment where every student can thrive.
Here are a few tips to help you succeed in the first weeks and beyond:
- Building Relationships with Pupils and Teachers
Take time to learn each pupil’s unique needs, preferences, and learning styles. This will allow you to tailor your approach, to ensure pupils feel supported and understood, and will help you integrate smoothly into the team.
- Be Proactive and Anticipate Needs
Being proactive is key to supporting pupils with ALN. Take time to observe and learn how each student responds to various teaching strategies. If you’re returning, use your prior knowledge to predict needs, whether you’re working 1:1, with small groups, or within a class. Offering support before pupils need it can make all the difference, whether that’s preparing materials, providing additional verbal cues, or giving a pupil extra time when needed.
- Stay Organised to Support Multiple Learners
Organisation is crucial, especially when supporting pupils with diverse learning needs. Spend time familiarising yourself with the resources and strategies in place. For those returning, take a moment to refresh your organisational methods to ensure you are fully prepared for the term ahead. Keeping track of goals, accommodations, and progress for each pupil you support ensures that you provide consistent and effective support.
- Continue Your Professional Development
Ongoing professional development is key. Explore new strategies, attend relevant PE Direct training, workshops, or join groups focused on ALN to keep improving your skills. This will help you stay up to date on new techniques and approaches, ensuring you can offer the most effective support to your students.
- Practice Patience and Flexibility
Patience is at the heart of supporting students with additional learning needs. If you’re new, remember that it takes time to learn how best to support each pupil. For those returning, continue to be flexible and patient as you adjust to any new developments in the classroom. Every pupil progresses at their own pace, and creating a supportive, encouraging environment will help them succeed.
- Collaborate Effectively
Effective collaboration with the lead teacher and other professionals is essential. Communicate regularly to align lesson plans and support strategies, to ensure that you’re meeting each pupil’s individual needs. Your insights, whether fresh or from experience, are invaluable in making sure every student receives the right support in class, in small groups, or 1:1 session.
- Promote Inclusivity and Celebrate Diversity
Inclusivity is crucial in an ALN setting – make sure every pupil feels included and valued. Encourage participation from all pupils, regardless of ability, and adapt your approach as necessary. Fostering an inclusive environment benefits not only individual learners but the entire classroom/group.
- Use Positive Reinforcement to Motivate
Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool, especially when supporting pupils with ALN. Celebrate progress—no matter how small. Encouraging achievements helps build confidence, boosts motivation, and reinforces the idea that every effort counts. The impact of your encouragement can inspire continued progress throughout the term.
We want you to know that your work as a teaching assistant plays a vital role in shaping the future of every pupil you support. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily tasks but remember: the work you do impacts the lives of your pupils. You’re not supporting pupils with additional learning needs succeed academically; you’re giving them the confidence, skills, and encouragement they need to become the best versions of themes
Thank you for all your dedication, passion, and patience. As you step into the term ahead, remember the impact you can have and the impression you leave. Let’s make this term a journey of growth, inclusion, and success for every pupil!
